Having
grown up in a far north suburb of Chicago, I flocked to the big
city of Chicago where I lived for 11 years, then ran away to the
woods of Northcentral Wisconsin. After 5 years, I uprooted myself
again, this time from the Midwest in Oct. ’06 to experience
life in the Southwest, here in Prescott, AZ.
Adventure and new beginnings are two very essential aspects of
life for me. Both aspects represent the quest to see things anew
and fresh, honest and true, and afford me the pleasure of experiencing
and appreciating new perspectives. |
I
believe this is the mindset I have toward the creative process
as well. I decided quite some time ago, that although I appreciate
talent and respect craftsmanship, I would continually seek to
participate in the creative process whether it be via writing,
poetry, pottery, photography, graphic design, or gardening, simply
because I enjoyed it and it was good for my soul.
Participating in creativity and art-making for me is a journey
that leads me to the purest parts of my being and that of the
universe. And photography does provide quite a journey! I once
heard someone regard poetry as painting in words. Well, for me,
photography is rather like poetry in images. When I first began
studying photography in college, I came upon images created by
the mystic, monk, poet-writer Thomas Merton. His photography left
quite an impression upon me: images of simple, ordinary, found
objects that captured a zen quality – at once restful and
intriguing. It is this experience in photography that I am most
attracted to and seek to emulate. |
